By Press Release
Wednesday, 2 August 2006
The Burton New Zealand Open will be held from 3rd to the 5th August at Snowpark NZ in Wanaka, New Zealand. It will mark the first of five Southern Hemisphere events on the 2006/2007 TTR World Snowboard Tour.
A hungry crew of international and local riders are set to challenge early season TTR World Snowboard Tour leaders, Danny Kass and Jamie Anderson at the event. Riders such as Danny Davis(USA), Scotty Largo(USA), Kazu Kakubo(JPN) and Nicolas Muller(SUI) look certain to challenge present tour leader, Kass who took the lead at the 4(Four) Star TTR event, the Abominable Snow Jam just two weeks ago. In the Women's, current No.2, Elena Hight fresh off winning a Volvo at the ASJ, is all but certain to edge in front of Anderson for Tour lead with a significant showing.
First executed in 2003, the Burton NZ Open’s will see an large array of elite riders taking part including seven 2006 Olympians. Not only is it the first Southern Hemisphere TTR event on the tour, but it also marks the kick off for this season's Burton Global Open Series, the second of which will be held later in the month at Falls Creek, Australia, marking the third 4(four) Star rated TTR event of the year. This years NZO will be hosted by ‘Snowpark NZ’ in the Cardrona Valley. Three days of fun and festivities will encapsulate the essence of snowboarding, transforming the Wanaka region into an international focal point for media, winter guests, touring pros and industry leaders.
The slopestyle and Halfpipe results of the NZO will culminate towards TTR World Rankings. A win at either of the NZO formats will amount to 700 TTR points. Six total wins are required for a full end of season result for men, while the women’s season total will be confirmed next week, prior to the NZO kick off.
The Star studded male field may certainly influence key tour leader spots, currently held by three US riders - (1)Danny Kass(USA), (2) Danny Davis(USA) and (3)Chad Otterstrom(USA).
Leading the challenge on Tour leadership and event titles will be the winner at last years NZ Open, Mason Aguirre (USA). Aguirre came in fourth at this year's Olympic Halfpipe event and third at the TTR 6(six) Star event The 2006 US Open Halfpipe Championships. He also scored silver at the Winter X Games. Danny Davis will also be present and with his current second place advantage on the TTR World Rankings the kid could lock-down at least one, if not two additional Championships results. Davis is a rising star, finishing an impressive 12th on the 2005/2006 TTR Tour, he holds further credits through his ‘2006 US Open Rookie of the Year’ award and a second place at the 2006 US Open Halfpipe competition.
Then there are the fearless kiwi locals. Already having proved their ability to kick anyone’s ass on their home turf(and abroad), the Southern pride and mana flag will be heavily guarded. Kiwi riders to watch for will be 2005 NZO third placed Tim Jackways. Also keep an eye on last years Slopestyle winner Nick Hyne and Mitch Brown, Will Jackways, Robett Hollis, Mark Anderson , Nick Brown and top 05/06TTR performer Quentin Robbins. Go the Kiwi’s!
Asian attendance will be headed by Japan's top riders, Takaharu Nakai, Kazuhiro Kokubo and Fumiyuki Murakami all members of the 2006 Japanese Olympic Team. With Asia hosting five TTR events this season, the inclusion of their top riders at early season TTR events will be crucial for early points accumulation. The caliber of the Asian riders present at the NZO creates a huge opportunity for them to score highly and could see, for the first time ever, a Japanese rider taking the Tour lead.
The women's competition and offered WTTR tour points also promise to be fiercely contested. With a maximum 1400 TTR points available over two formats, the NZO will be an establishing leg for the women. Current Women’s Tour #2 and recent Burton Abominable Snow Jam Halfpipe Champion Elena Hight(USA) will be onsite and ready to do battle. So will 05/06 top ten TTR competitor, Torah Bright(AUS) whose long list of career results includes 2006 US Open Women's Halfpipe Champion. Bright was also a member of the Australian Olympic Team in Turin. Bright will be up against Women’s 2005 NZO Slopestyle champion Juliane Bray(NZL), and fellow Kiwi Kendall Brown. Also present will be Hana Beaman(USA), fourth on the 05/06 WTTR Tour, American Molly Aguirre and Japan's 2006 Olympian, Junko Asazuma. The Women’s TTR World Tour’s top three spots are currently held by (1)Jamie Anderson(USA),(2) Elena Height(USA) and (3) Silvia Mittermueller(GER).
