Burton NZ Open - Day 1 HIghlights

the finals have just finished and what a sick session- they went at it like lions in a zoo with the gate left open, that bluebird shifted off to the side and an edge of mist sat beside us flattening the light of and on so with marking on the kickers and knuckles they went at it!!!
The girls and guys were continuous - 3 runs each for the final.

The chair lift was chocker running up the side of the course giving overhead views to riders and hoots went out as the best throwdowns were seen.

Poulder and Jay shared the mic, cameras were rolling, records spinning and i was writing highlights as fast as the ink would come out of the pen,

I'll throw out a few highlights and we'll have the official results as soon as they come back from the judges.

Imagine the scene and here it goes....

Rails took a smashing - solid spins on and off, tail slides, nose presses a few pastings but always contained and riders showing polished & relaxed jib styles mixed with solid bombs

The kickers - well....the final showed a mix everything to straight stiffys, jamie lynn style methods, backflips, 180's 3'c, 540s, 7's everyway possible on to 900's, even 1080, and if you like you spin flat or corked then just put your order in at the top.

The wall ride had it going on as well - hand plants, rocks to fakie, over the back etc etc..

Bottom rail and gap to rail - fast and slow spins on and off, backflip, slides all ways.

35 Mikkel Bang NOR fast on the rails to b/s cab 720 to switch b/s 900 huge! to backflip over the gap at the end

all of these runs of parts of were exceptional in their own uniqe styles to watch - while some of the same moves were thrown they are all different - sounds twisted but thats what i mean,

Prize giving has been on and the money in the hand of the winners - lots of noise heard in support of the competetors who all deserve mad props for serving up this level of action on the first day of the NZ Burton Open 06.

1.50pm round 2, finals coming soon
With legend skater dean hunt in the Snow park kitchen along with a big team - we are full and ready for the finals, Riders are sifting everywhere you look, resting , eating, riding or competeing. P digs is up there making calls with Jay, Phill Erikson from nz snowboarder mag miles from Boarderzone and heaps of other cameras and tv crews line the walls.

Womens finals are in a few minutes so i'll be as fast as possible - the second round - the sun is coming out to reveal bluebird on one side, cloud in the valley, 1/2 pipe parctice is finished and pipe closed for the comp tomorrow,

In the second round i moved about a bit - sitting under the first booter and watching riders boost over my head like a kid watching fireworks go off - it was an insane view - the different styles comming out - tweaks, stalled spins, pokes, different corked angles, some high some long, some wasted on the knuckle - at one stage a double backflip.

Dave Driscall usa burton team manager came to hang out on the kicker with me - stoked to see his boys tearing it apart, he's here with riders till around the 21 aug welcome back to NZ Dave,

after that Danny Davis came down for a sick run pointing a switch back 540 in some weird but super stylish way into a smooth big b/s 720 - nice

right i have to rip up there to catch the girls - there are heaps more highlights in my notes but i can't type fast enough
it will be sick to see the girls go off!!!!!

first chair, qualification runs 11.45am
strapped up and on the chair to head up to the course, beside me are Luke Metrani & Keegan Valaika, to Cali boys from the USA getting ready for their 1st Run - atfer a couple of hand shakes and a good luck it was off to the top of the course to see the crew - Dyl Butt and Sonny Fisher organising the rippers all clustered around the top.

the action was all on/ still is - i had to tear myself away to rip back to base and fill you in.

The girls had run through so i'll catch the second and finals, it was the guys up, jesus they know how to fly!!!!
i'll try to list a few stand outs from the time i was there but to begin there are two box/rails one after the other followed by two huge booters and another gap/kinked rail or wall ride.

The was ill use of everything - a phone call from a mate mid way said shall i come up for a look? - what do you say? get your ass up here mate - you don't want to miss a minute!!!!!!

This is world riding at it's best and not even finals! big mixed entrant line-up, hoots from the side, tunes and mc commentry by jay.
