The Australian Open, going into its third year, was scheduled for August 25-27, 2006 at Falls Creek, Victoria and was to be the second event in the 2006 - 2007 Burton Global Open Series, which spans five countries over the course of the year.
Burton and Falls Creek are committed to showcasing the highest-quality snowboarding events in Australia, but organizers feel that the Open would have been compromised if they had allowed it to continue this season.
Liam Griffin, Burton Snowboards Events and Entertainment Manager, stated “We are very excited about the growth of the Australian Open over the past few years and want to make sure we can see the event continue to progress rather than take a step backwards in a challenging snow year.”
Falls Creek is Australia’s only true ski in, ski out resort in the heart of the Australian high country. Falls Creek focuses on freeride, which has elevated the resort to world-class standards. The resort has also installed urban features not previously seen in Australia. “As the host mountain, we understand the commitment to ourselves, our sponsors and riders to ensure that the quality and integrity remain for all involved during an unpredictable season,” says Francis Jackson, Race and Events Manager, Falls Creek Ski Lifts.
