9TH ANNUAL RED BULL NANSHAN OPEN HIGHLIGHTING CHINA ON THE INTERNATIONAL SNOWBOARD MAP
Friday, 21 January 2011
Nanshan, China– January 19, 2011: The 9th Red Bull Nanshan Open, a 4Star slopestyle event on the Swatch TTR World Tour, is getting ready to kick off this weekend, the 22-23rd January 2011, with 19 invited riders from around the world ready to take on seven Chinese riders. The national qualifier event for the Nanshan Open took place earlier this week, where 30 riders from all over China competed for a spot to ride in the main event this weekend. These qualified Chinese riders will go head-to-head with a field of international pro snowboarders for a shot at a piece of the $30,000 USD prize purse, a maximum of 500 Swatch TTR ranking points and the glory that goes along with winning this prestigious event title.
Solid Riding on the Menu
The impressive riding level at the national qualifier event the week before in the Nike 6.0 Nanshan Park was only a precursor of what is to be expected at the main event. Chinese rider, Xiao Guo, qualifed first with a big backside 360 mute and a corked backside 540 crail on the jumps and a switch boardslide on the rainbow box and a frontside tail bonk on the last jib. Runs like Xiao Guo’s are a testament to how much snowboarding has been progressing in China over the years and the 9th Red Bull Nanshan Open has been integral in helping to push the sport forward in this country of over one-billion people.
Xiao Guo will join six of his countrymen in the 9th Red Bull Nanshan Open main event this weekend and will ride against the likes of Janne Korpi (FIN) who is currently sitting in the Swatch TTR World No.10 and last years winner Juuso Laivisto (FIN), as well as, top riders such as Nick Brown (NZL) and Risto Mattila (FIN). Additionally on the riders list is Swiss ripper Colin Frei, who in 2009 won the 6Star Billabong Air & Style quarterpipe. Local rider, Xiao Hu, will also join the field of riders in this with his wild card entry from the 6Star Oakley Shaun White Air & Style Beijing back in December.
