Finland’s Ville Uotila Breaks Into TTR World Top 16
27.03.2006
Ästhetiker Wangl Tangl - 05/06 Season Final 4(four) Star Event
MAYERHOFEN, TIROL AUSTRIA –This seasons last TTR 4(four) Star event the Ästhetiker Wängle Tangl held over the weekend in Mayerhofen, Austria was won by Finland’s Ville Uotila who edged out an explosive performance by Austrian local Stefan Gimpl and Finland’s Tomi Savela who took third.
In what has been a long and challenging season for all competitors, judging the finely tuned riding of such elites did not become any easier. Less than 4 points separated the top four riders including two tied for first place and one point separating third. Only after scrutinizing video replays of all finalists was a unanimous decision made by the jury panel awarding Uotila’s non-stop technical wizardry the ’06 title at the Ästhetiker Wängl Tängl Champions title and earning him 700 TTR points. The result moved him into 15th on the TTR World Snowboard Tour rankings. Even with video analysis no separation could be made between between the power perfection of Stefan Gimpl and subliminal style of Tomi Savela, resulting in a tied second place. Jaakko Ruha of Finland finished fourth.
The event, a staple stop for key players on the tour witnessed notable end of season performances from the likes of Steve Gruber(AUT), Friedl Kolar(AUT) Jaakko Ruha(FIN), Heppu Pentti(FIN), and Aleski Vanninen(FIN), Quentin Robbins(NZL) and Anthony ‘Tonton’ Holland(SUI) with early TTR World Tour leader Chris Kroell’s finishing 4th equal (together with Wolle Nyvelt(AUT)) Kroell’s result moved him back into the TTR World Top 16 Rankings.
An additional event highlight was a unique ‘Crädle’ feature. Developed by pro riders/course designers Wolle Nyvelt and Roli Schwaninger the ‘Cradle’s roofed “half-egg” design allowed the competitors no less than eight additional riding options. Accessible as a frontside or backside hip or as a frontside or backside pipe wall or circle/inverted path in either direction it introduced an innovative feature never been seen before in competition. The event winner Ville Uotila, who had spun all four 900’s on the upper course pulled frontside 540’s and frontside 700’s in the Cradle with local Tommy ‘Beckna’ Eberharter(AUT) winning the ‘Best Cradle Trick’ Award with an air-to-disaster re-entry.
