Christchurch is the main entry point for people coming to check out the South Island resorts. It is beautiful city with a distinctive English feel. It is definitely worth checking out before you head off south.
With only 350,000 inhabitants getting around and checking out the various tourist attractions and shops is easy. For this reason it has a very relaxed atmosphere. Hang out, have a beer and enjoy.
Here are some suggested things to do while you are in Christchurch:
Check out the Bungee Rocket. This is basically a 2 seater ball which is strapped to 2 bungees and fires you into the air. Apparently you experience about 5 G's.
For something more sedate try a tram ride around Christchurch.
Check out the fairs and markets that usually happen on the weekends.

Christchurch has a very lively bar and night club scene. For some jazz music head for Vesuvio's and then on to The Boulevard. If you are after some more dance music head over to Viaduct. Right next is another great bar - Di Lusso. The Azzure Bar and Coyotes are also always pretty good. Finally check out the Mint for something a little different.
As well as the usual outcrop of fast food joints, Christchurch offers a wide array of choices - Thai, Turkish, Indian, Egyptian and Asian restaurants are dotted around the city. Head for Oxford Terrace aka "The Strip", which is in the centre of town. It is littered with bars and restaurants and is always pretty happening.
There are also plenty of cafes now springing up in Christchurch. Try out the Java Cafe just up from Cheap Skates Ph:+64 3 366 0195. Or if you are after a more vegan fell try out the Main St Cafe and Bar Ph: +64 3 365421. They serve super large meals for only $5 to $8. Other good cafes include The Honey Pot, C-1, Cafe Roma or the Globe.
There are several quality snowboard shops in Christchurch. Most them carry the major brands such as Burton, K2 and Nitro. They also carry the quality New Zealand brands such as Unit, STS and Fruition.
